The incident began around 2:25 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, when Fredricksburg police received a call from a victim of an armed robbery at the Spotsylvania County line, they said.
A victim told police that the suspect's vehicle was traveling into the city along Lafayette Boulevard. A patrol officer eventually spotted the vehicle on Lafayette Boulevard near Longstreet Avenue and tried to stop it, but the driver sped away, police said.
The speeding driver then turned right onto Lee Drive, lost control, and struck a tree, authorities said.
The driver and one passenger died at the scene, police said.
Three other people who were riding in the car were taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
The victims' names were expected to be released by police on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
